Digital Production Support for Industrial Engineering - Current State and Future Options

Advanced production planning tools in combination with powerful computing technology have reached the eye-line of product development tools, e.g. CAD-systems. The new tools offer planning and engineering support functions on the basis of 3-dimensional models and thus can easily be enhanced with 3d visualization facilities, e.g. a power-wall or a cave. Also they allow for an integrated viewing of products and production equipment. This situation provides new opportunities in Concurrent/Simultaneous Engineering. This contribution will discuss sample applications of Digital Production Support, and will outline the challenges and opportunities for a future-oriented industrial engineering. Main sub-topics will be “New Opportunity for Integrated Product Development”, “Factory Planning Support”, “Linking Digital Models and Real Production” and “Innovation Cluster »Digital Manufacturing«”.
